Checklist: Preparation Before Travelling
- Choose vignette type according to trip duration
- Have vehicle number plate ready
- Prepare payment method (credit/debit card)
- Check validity date of the vignette
- Identify special toll sections on the route
- Bring sufficient cash for special toll sections
- Keep confirmation email after purchase
- If changing number plate: transfer vignette
- Check roaming settings for online purchase
- Know alternative routes without vignette requirement
- Check vehicle weight (under 3.5t?)
- Check exemption regulations for your vehicle
Limits and Exceptions
- Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to the GO toll, not the vignette requirement
- Emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) are exempt from toll obligations
- Vehicles with valid disability passes may be exempt under certain conditions
- Military vehicles of the Austrian armed forces are exempt
- Public administration vehicles are exempt
- Motorway exits (short sections) can be used without a vignette
- Certain border crossings have special regulations
- Vehicles with foreign number plates are subject to the same rules as Austrian ones

Complaints and Appeals
If you have received a penalty that you consider unjustified, you can appeal. Contact ASFINAG Customer Service in writing at Rotenturmstraße 5-9, 1010 Vienna. Include your number plate, the date of the alleged violation and a justification. The deadline for appeals is generally 4 weeks from the date the penalty notice is served.
Service Area
The vignette requirement applies to the entire Austrian motorway and expressway network. This covers routes in all nine federal states: Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Burgenland.
