The Austrian vignette is a toll charge for using the Austrian motorway network. It has been mandatory since 1997 for all motor vehicles up to a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes travelling on motorways and expressways in Austria. The vignette is managed and controlled by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft).
Since 2023, the digital vignette has been the standard form. This means: no more sticker on the windscreen – instead, your vehicle's registration number is registered in the ASFINAG system. Validity is automatically checked at toll controls.
It is important to understand that the vignette does not cover all toll roads in Austria. Certain tunnels, mountain roads and special toll sections require additional fees that must be paid separately. These include, for example, the Arlberg Tunnel, the Brenner motorway and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
The vignette requirement is regulated in the Federal Road Toll Act 2002 (BStMG). Violations of the toll obligation can be punished with significant fines. Controls are carried out automatically by stationary and mobile control systems as well as by toll enforcement officers.
ASFINAG offers three different vignette types that differ in their validity period and price. Choose the type that best suits your travel plans.

Since 1 January 2023, the digital vignette is the only available form of Austrian vignette. The sticker vignette has been completely abolished. The system works exclusively through number plate registration.

Yes, the digital vignette is valid immediately after purchase. There is no waiting period.
You must transfer the vignette to the new number plate. This is free of charge via the ASFINAG website.
Caravans (trailers) do not need their own vignette. The vignette of the towing vehicle is sufficient, provided the towing vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes.
